Here are a few shots of the Steffen 8ft 3/4wt 3 piece fiberglass build. Customer requested polished nickel hardware and titanium guides. I will wrap the rod in antique gold YLI silk which will blend with the blank very nice after several coats of spar. Tipping color will be black. More photos on facebook. I had indicated in an earlier note how very pleased I am with the workmanship and appearance of my new rod. Yesterday our weather warmed and I had a chance to get outside and cast it.

I am very impressed with the ability of the rod to generate line speed and form tight loops. Honestly, I am quite surprised at how accurate the rod is. I have a series of small plastic cones at a variety of distances. I was able to reliably swat an 8" diameter cone at 45' with the yarn fly. (Despite my own casting limitations.) I expected the tip to track somewhat loosely and the accuracy to suffer a bit. I am starting tothink that one of these with some slightly different hardware would make a great bonefish rod!

I am getting ready to start some work on the Hexagraph blank I have been holding on to for quite a few months. I think I may have some time this week (while I am waiting for blanks to arrive) to get the grip turned, ferrules blued and seat mounted on this one. Hope to have this at the MFF show this year. White Kabuto 7033 Finished

The White Kabuto 7ft 3wt 3pc is now finished. There are only a few photos that really show the "real" color of the wraps on this rod. It came out very well, I think the wraps are the same color as the blued nickel all metal seat (which is what the client wanted) and the "titanium" silk thread is light enough to show the black tipping as well. I am very pleased and I think Christopher will be as well.

Wraps are Clover brand silk, with black tipping. Reel seat is all metal blued nickel made by Joel Lemke. Blued Nickel silver winding check and stripper guide frame with a black and white agate stone. Starting Another White Kabuto 7033

Here are a few photos of the parts I will use for this next White Kabuto build. Client requested a titanium colored silk wrap. Blued nickel down lock all metal seat, titanium carbide snakes/tip top. And a flor grade cigar grip. Not in the photos are a Blued nickel agate stripping guide with white and black stone, and the black thread I will use as tipping. This should be a neat looking rod.

About the blank; it is the same taper as the Translucent tea s-glass blanks, just a different color. This will be a one of a kind rod, since I don't plan to make this color in the new batch of blanks that are being made now. This will still make a great rod.

10'0" 4 Piece Yellow Glass Fly Rod

I finished, and was able to have some fun with this rod this week. This is the prototype 10ft 2 handed E-glass fiberglass fly rod. Lots of power, and surprisingly easy to handle. All flor grade fore and aft grips (burl cork on ex-stream aft end). Heavy wire tich guides, and tip top. Custom spey seat (double threaded) made for me by Joel Lemke. Wrapped Yellow silk, tipped gold. This rod is now headed off to Washington state for a few demo fishing trips. More blanks are in the process of being made, I will have 2 available later this month. 8'3" 6/7wt Fiberglass Rod SOLD

SOLD Finished and ready for a new home. This is one of the newest tapers I have, 6/7wt 8'3" 4 Piece Yellow Glass fiberglass. This new blank taper was made by Mcfarland, the taper is very similar to the 8ft yellow glass (progressive medium fast action, soft tipped), with just a bit more backbone and some added length. This new taper is cross weighted as a 6/7wt, I recommend a 6wt DT and a 7wt WF. Great rod for big trout and smallies. Bit small for large mouth or steelies.

Specs: Reel seat is a blued nickel up lock, with maple burl wood insert (By Joel Lemke), Flor grade modified full wells, with a one inch fighting butt. Titanium carbide snakes, and tip top. Minima stripping guide. Wrapped in yellow silk, tipped antique gold (which I think is a good match to the wood insert). Mid -stream grade rod (complete tipping, without agate guide). . Signature S-glass Update

Update on the Graywolf Signature S-glass rods. Due to the emails and calls Ive received for these rods, I feel it is important to post an update.

A New batch of blanks are being made, I will let clients know when blanks are in stock and ready to begin building. I plan to build on first come first served basis, some have ordered more than one rod so build time on multiple rods will be slightly longer.

The current list of blanks: All the 5wt’s blanks are sold out. There will be two 2wt 8ft 3 piece blanks available that are not spoken for. I am not taking deposits to reserve the remaining two blanks. I am willing to put two people on a list for these rods, and will notify these folks when blanks are in stock and again when they are ready to be built.

We will make another rounds of blanks when I feel current orders are fulfilled.

I started a 7ft 4wt 3pc Yellow glass build today. Client requested silver tipping, silver is a color I don't typically work with, so I decided to incorporate it in to this build the best way I could without making this rod look completely different than my other rods. Main wrap color is light green, and a thin band of granger green, then the silver trim, and another thin band of granger green. I think this will look stunning after a few coats of varnish. Here are a few shoots of the starter wraps for the 10ft Yellow Glass rod. It's hard to see the antique gold trim wraps, because the yellow silk is so bright... but the gold trim is there. I choose to add the trim after the double wrap on the ferrules, to make the ferrule wraps look a bit shorter after varnished (I extend the ferrule wrap to the end of the male ferrule, simply for security. But the long wrap does not look as appealing to me). More to come soon. And more photos on facebook.

"I have only looked the rods over, not being able to cast them yet. Perhaps tomorrow. I must admit though, that the S glass was a hell of a lot more of a rod than I thought I was getting. Absolutely another piece of rod that I will dream about fishing when I am not fishing it. You just made me another primary fishing rod in my local river.

As for the Graphite, you nailed it. Just what I wanted from a Vintage looking rod. The signature could have been a bit more clear (lighter), but it really doesn’t matter. Oh, and the wood is exemplary, truly magnificent with no “black dot’s”.

As for the signature Jan writes of, the blank is green and I used black ink. I agree with Jan, as I have a problem with white ink (just don't like the look). I was willing to use black ink, and the signature not be as noticeable than to have a white ink signature on this rod, perhaps I will use red next time.

My New Rod

I love being on the receiving end of a custom build. For the first time, I decided to have someone else build a rod for me. Yes I know, but listen.... I wanted to fish this rod last June, and if I didn't find someone to build it, I would not have it for this coming fishing trip in June.

I contacted bamboo rod maker Jory Ward, he was easy to talk to, understood what I was looking for and is getting it done. I am very pleased and can't wait for the finished rod. You can see a bunch more photos on Jory's blog Chasin Trout.

10ft Yellow Glass Switch Rod build

Well, I had time today to turn the grips for the "Switch rod". Here are a few photos of what I have done. It was a challenge and I had to modify my lathe to accept this task. I think this rod will be loved by some and hated by others. From the start I assumed the rod would be pretty stiff at the butt section, but after having the grip assembly finished and flex testing the rod... this will be a full flex switch rod. At first look I would rate it as a 5/6/7wt. I think this will be a fun rod. I posted more photos on facebook.

Update on things in the shop. I am currently working on back log, folks that have put deposits on rods will be seeing more of them finished in the coming week. It has been very busy, as many of you know I also have a day job and this time of years seems to be my busiest, not to mention I need time with the family.

New stuff, I know many of you are waiting to see the 10 foot 6/7wt Yellow glass 4 piece rod be completed and it’s coming along, it won’t be much longer and I will have a finished rod. I also have in the works a 10ft 5/6wt 4pc yellow glass, along with another of the 6/7wt’s.

FUN – NEW AND EXCITING (al least to me)

NEW YELLOW GLASS TAPERS – Yes I have new tapers due to release soon. I am working with Mike McFarland to expand on the Yellow glass series of rods. Currently my exclusive tapers are as follows in 8ft - 4wt, 5wt, 6wt, and 8wt (the 8wt will be changed to 8’3” keep reading please). New tapers will be 8’3” 5/6wt, 8’3” 6/7wt, and 8’3” 7/8wt. Mike is also working on another taper, just too early to speak of.

Graphite: I am working on getting a few graphite options. Currently I offer rods built on Hexagraph and McFarland blanks. I am also working on more American made graphite blanks. I sent info for another taper design to an American company and hope to have finished the demo and be able to offer finished rods after the Holidays. This new taper is a 9’3” 4 Piece Full Flex model. Currently I am working on this in a 5wt, and may expand in the future.

Bamboo. I will be slowing down the making of bamboo. Time is not on my side, not enough hours in the day to make these time consuming rods. I do not plan to stop building bamboo, but I will offer rods occasionally I estimate 2 rods per year.

New Switch Rod Reel Seat

The new reel seat for the 10ft Yellow Glass switch / two handed rod has arrived. If you recall I sent a sketch to Joel Lemke a few weeks back, and now the finished product is ready for the install.

I was interested in this style to gain a little extra length for this 10ft build. This seat allows the user to adjust where he may want the reel positioned. And the slip rings lock on both fore and aft sides of the reel seat. Another nice feature is the "alignment dots" on the slip rings, this makes mounting your reel as simple as lining up the dots.

A bunch of cork, lots of wrapping and some time to build it, is all I need to get this 10ft 6/7wt 4 piece Yellow fiberglass rod built.

Really enjoyed fishing the new S-glass rod the

last two days. The first fish landed on the

new 5 wt was a nice 19" brown for the East

Walker River in CA. Caught quite a few on the

new rod. Sight fishing nymphs in skinny water.

The rod was a delight to use. Love the mending

and roll casting ability.Light in the hand and

handled large fish with ease.

At times, though, wish it had an extra 2' of

length when trying to keep the line out of

conflicting currents. The 2nd day was on the

Owens River in 20 mph winds. Had to throw

streamers on a T-130 sink-tip. Handled the

sink-tip and #8 cone head Woolly Buggers

pretty well. No ear piercings were noted.

This project is now ready for the next stage.. getting some finished rods on the market. I have finally gotten the new S-Glass blanks ferruled and ready to build. I have secretly been working on these new s-glass blanks for what seems like forever. I have not told many folks, but did let the cat out of the bag a few times.

The blanks are a translucent honey, dark tea color. Hard to see from the photos, but in the sunlight you can just about see thru these blanks. The 5wt blanks feature a white spigot ferrule, and the 2wt blanks are tip over butt ferruled.

Currently I have decided to make the following lengths and weights: Both blanks are 8ft in length and are three piece. 2 wt's and 5 wt's are now available, and I believe the 2wt will be the lightest and the 5wt being the largest line weight I will offer. I plan to offer maybe one other line weight in between.

I will post more information as rods are finished.

I am back to the grid as of today. Had a great time fishing salmon in our Michigan waters. The fish were very large this year, and many could not be landed. If you are planning to go; take a 9 or 10wt rod, the 8wt was a bit small this season. I have also heard the salmon will be even larger next year.

My 8ft 8wt 4 Piece Yellow Glass is finished as of today! and I leave in the Morning. Also taking along my Boneyard fly box/flies, my Lamson Konic reel (a friend suggested this reel), and the custom Mooseknuckle landyard.

Yellow Glass Fiberglass, flor grade, modified full wells grip. Guides and tip top are titanium carbide, blued agate stripping guide. Rod is wrapped in translucent silk tipped chinese red. The reel seat is a custom prototype made by Joel (all metal with a threaded metal fighting butt), this will be given a workout on this rod. I will use it for salmon, then sent south to be used for redfish then to North Carolina, and finally back to Michigan for some steelhead.

I opened my email this morning and found this, what a great start to my day.

A SHORT REVEIW OF THE GRAYWOLF 7FT 4WT 4PCS

I received the Graywolf 7’ 4wt 4pcs on the day before I was leaving for Bosnia. This rod was bought with one thing in mind, close combat with large trout’s and graylings. The unwrapping of the package revealed a stunning piece of beauty of a rod! A quick test before we left was all I had time to. It performed well on the lawn in front of my house. However, would it perform well under pressure from the rivers of Bosnia?

This rod with its short length and full flex proved to be the ultimate tool. When fishing from 7-15 meters on wary fish with tippets down to 0.10 (7x) it is imperative that the rod’s action isn’t too stiff as that would easily break your tippet. Several times I found myself engaged with fish that would take the line on a run for about 25meters, hard pulls, quick pulls, quickly changing of courses, the rod held up firm. Careful takes from the fish or brutal takes, the rod plays along, easily tiring out the fish without too much strain on the tippet, allowing me full focus on the fish and not the worrying if the line should break or not. The length of the rod proved to be just fine for these kind of rivers where you don’t wade deeper than your waist. If your back wasn’t clear, the rod had no problem performing roll casts and water casts. It easily lifted the line and gently laid down the fly on the surface, ready for another drift. The biggest fish caught on this was a rainbow trout of 3kgs. The rod bent itself all the way down to the cork, but never, ever, showed any signs of “taking on too much”. I simply love this rod!

Blued nickle down lock slide band seat, with a wonderful stacked bamboo reel seat, custom made for me by Joel. Turned a flor grade cigar cork grip for this rod. Titanium Carbide snakes/tip top and a blued agate stripper.

Steffen Build for Sale. Finished last night. This one is ready for a new home. 8'3" 5/6wt 2pc Steffen S-glass fiberglass.

SOLD .Built and wrapped this rod, the way I build most of my personal rods. Clean, Simple and Classic. All metal down locking threaded reel seat, this is a exclusive design made for me by my friend Joel Lemke. I know its hard to tell from the photos, clients are always impressed with these seats. Joel also incorporated a small dimple/dot on the slip ring so there is no fumbling around to find the groove for the reel foot.

Rod is wrapped in silk, then varnished clear. I milled a modified fullwells flor grade cork grip for this rod. Guides and tip top are titanium carbide. This is a great taper.
